Ethics is the study of values and beliefs about proper moral conduct. This has become an increasingly controversial issue in recent times. The influence of postmodernism has created a world in which absolute values are seriously questioned, if not denied. The new philosophy of pluralism (the concept that all beliefs and values, even contradictory ones, are equally valid), has created a society where it is no longer acceptable to insist that your own view is correct. Do objective, absolute values exist? Or are we destined to henceforth wander vaguely through the murky mists of subjectivism? If absolute moral values and ethics do exist, on what basis can we determine them? Who gets to declare, ultimately, what is right and what is wrong? Is it simply a matter of majority vote? Or an act of parliament? If so, how can we be sure that the majority will get it right every time? After all, the majority of Nazis were convinced of the rightness of their genocidal cause.
Christians believe that the Bible offers an absolute set of moral and ethical standards. These standards have not been voted on by a plebiscite, or legislated by a parliament. They have been communicated to mankind by the God who created us and who has authoritatively declared how he wants us to live. His standards are not up for debate. He has not asked us for our opinion. We have not been commissioned to form a working committee to modify or ratify them. God is the supreme ruler of the universe and his standards are non-negotiable.
This does not infer that they are harsh, punitive or unreasonable. On the contrary, God’s desire is for our good. His standards are there for our protection. He is a good Father who knows what is best for us. By abiding by his standards we will enter into the life he designed us for: a life of fellowship with him and with each other – a life characterised by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22).
On this page you will find helpful resources that provide a defense of biblical, Christian ethics, in an age which is increasingly drifting further away from God’s standards.
