Carbon-14 is the evolutionist’s worst nightmare. Let me explain:
The theory of evolution rests upon the assumption of ‘deep time’. Without millions and billions of years, evolution cannot even begin to be plausible. This is because natural selection operating on random mutations would require vast ages to generate the extraordinary complexity we see in living organisms. The entire theory, therefore, stands or falls on the credibility of this deep-time model.
Yet the presence of measurable carbon-14 (C-14) in materials that should be utterly devoid of it represents a huge problem for this model. If coal, oil, natural gas, and even diamonds contain detectable amounts of radiocarbon, then they – and the rock strata in which they are found – cannot be millions or billions of years old, as evolutionary theory demands. Instead, they must be only thousands of years old, fully consistent with the biblical account of a recent creation and a global Flood. The presence of Carbon-14 in supposedly extremely ancient materials is the Achilles heel of evolutionary theory. Let me now unpack this in detail.
The Science of Carbon-14
Firstly, a tiny bit of science is necessary. I’ll try to make it as simple as possible. Carbon exists in nature primarily in two stable forms (‘isotopes’): carbon-12 (C-12) and carbon-13 (C-13). These numbers refer to the total number of protons and nuetrons in the nucleus of each atom. A very small percentage of carbon exists as the radioactive (or unstable) isotope carbon-14 (C-14).

Unstable C-14 is formed in the upper atmosphere when high energy neutrons from cosmic rays collide with nitrogen-14 atoms, knocking out a proton and forming a C-14 atom. This newly formed C-14 combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, which plants absorb during photosynthesis. Animals and humans acquire C-14 by consuming plants or other animals that have eaten plants.

While they are alive, organisms contain within their bodies a relatively constant ratio of C-14 to C-12 that mirrors the same ratio of these carbon isotopes in the atmosphere. When a person or animal dies, however, they stop exchanging carbon with the environment and the C-14 in their tissues begins to decay back into nitrogen-14 at a known rate. The longer it has been since an organism has died, the lower the ratio of C-14 to C-12 will be evident in their body since C-14 decays but C-12 does not. This rate of decay is referred to as the ‘half-life”: the time it takes for half the original element to decay to a more stable element. The half-life of C-14 is about 5,730 years.
Therefore, by measuring the ratio of C-14 to C-12 in a sample, scientists can calculate how much C-14 has decayed and estimate how long it has been since the organism died.
The Time Limit of Carbon Dating
Because C-14 decays relatively quickly, it has a built-in time limit for dating:
- After 5 half-lives (about 29,000 years), only about 3% of the original C-14 remains.
- After 10 half-lives (about 57,000 years), only about 0.1% remains.
- After 15 half-lives (about 86,000 years), C-14 is undetectable.
Even with the most sensitive instruments, no measurable C-14 can exist in samples older than about 100,000 years. Beyond this, any original C-14 would have completely decayed away.
This means that if coal (supposedly 30–300 million years old) or diamonds (supposedly 1–3 billion years old) still contain detectable C-14, then something is profoundly wrong with the deep-time paradigm. These organic substances simply CAN’T be as old as deep-time evolutionists propose.
The Evidence: Carbon-14 in Coal and Diamonds

Numerous studies, both creationist and secular, have detected measurable C-14 in samples thought to be extremely ancient:
- Coal: Across multiple continents and coal seams spanning the Carboniferous, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, coal samples consistently yield apparent radiocarbon “ages” of 40,000–60,000 years. Importantly, there has NEVER been a coal sample that has been tested which has been devoid of carbon-14.
- Oil, Natural Gas, and Fossils: Similar radiocarbon levels are found in petroleum deposits and carbonate fossils, which by evolutionary reckoning should be tens or hundreds of millions of years old.
- Diamonds: As the hardest known natural substance, diamonds are resistant to contamination and closed to outside carbon infiltration. Yet accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) tests have detected measurable C-14 within diamonds. Since diamonds are thought to be 1–3 billion years old, this is a devastating blow to the evolutionary timescale.
The RATE project (Radioisotopes and the Age of The Earth), led by creationist scientists in the early 2000s, conducted extensive C-14 testing. They found that virtually all carbon-bearing materials, regardless of supposed age or depth, contain measurable radiocarbon. This uniformity indicates that the presence of C-14 is not anomalous but systemic.
The Importance of the C-14/C-12 Ratio
Crucially, radiocarbon dating does not merely detect the presence of C-14; it measures the ratio of C-14 to C-12 in the sample. This ratio matters for two reasons:
- It provides a check against contamination. If modern carbon were introduced into a sample (through groundwater, handling, or environmental exposure), it would typically disrupt the expected balance of C-14 to C-12, producing anomalous results rather than a coherent age.
- It allows reproducibility. The fact that coal and diamonds from widely separated regions consistently yield similar C-14/C-12 ratios — corresponding to “ages” in the same range (40,000–60,000 years) — strongly suggests that the measured C-14 is not a product of random contamination but is intrinsic to the material itself.
In other words, the very methodology of radiocarbon dating refutes the contamination objection. The uniform C-14/C-12 ratios across diverse samples show that the C-14 is part of the original sample itself.
Evolutionary Explanations and Creationist Responses
Evolutionary scientists, committed to the deep-time paradigm, recognise this serious issue but attempt to explain it away. Four main explanations are proposed:
a) Contamination
Some scientists claim that the measured C-14 in ancient samples is not original but has been introduced through handling, exposure, or groundwater infiltration. However, several lines of evidence make this explanation highly implausible:
- Diamondsare among the hardest, most chemically resistant natural substances known and are impervious to the kinds of contamination that could introduce measurable amounts of C-14. Yet even diamonds consistently yield detectable C-14. This poses a significant challenge to the contamination hypothesis.
- Coal samples, often extracted from deep underground and sealed away from surface conditions for supposed millions of years, also contain measurable C-14. Their isolation makes recent introduction of carbon virtually impossible.
- Consistency of C-14/C-12 ratiosfurther undermines the contamination explanation. Across samples from diverse locations, the ratio is both reproducible and within the same range, corresponding to radiocarbon “ages” of approximately 40,000–60,000 years. If contamination were the source, one would expect erratic and widely divergent results, as introduced C-14 would not appear in proper proportion to the existing C-12. Instead, the coherent and repeatable ratios point strongly to the conclusion that the C-14 is intrinsic to the samples, not a later contaminant.
b) Instrumental Background
Some scientists claim that the detected levels of C-14 represent background noise in the instruments. They claim that instruments can sometimes give false readings of C-14 when none is actually present.
While it is true that “blanks” (samples known to be C-14 free) can sometimes yield false readings of tiny amounts of C-14, coal and diamonds consistently return significant levels of C-14 that are well beyond the miniscule background level of occasional false readings. Furthermore, the consistency of results across independent laboratories completely refutes the idea that these are mere artifacts of machine sensitivity.
c) In-situ Production
Some scientists claim that nuclear reactions within the samples (such as the radioactive decay of nitrogen or uranium) could produce ongoing new C-14 within the sample over time as a result of neutron capture.
This is feasible, but the levels of C-14 that such radioactive decay would produce would be infinitesimally small in comparison to the actual levels of C-14 that are measurably present in the samples. In order to produce the kind of C-14 levels that are consistently being detected, the source material would have to contain huge amounts of unstable uranium or other unstable elements – thousands or even millions of times more than what the samples actually contain. Even in optimal conditions, the rates of in-situ production of C-14 would be many orders of magnitude too small to explain the current levels of C-14.
d) Carbon Migration
Some scientists claim that carbon from other sources (such as groundwater or CO₂) has infiltrated porous materials such as coal in modern times, thus introducing more C-14.
But while coal can, indeed, be porous, the levels of C-14 in all samples are consistent across different coal ranks and depths – including deposits where no infiltration would be possible. More importantly, diamonds are nonporous and impervious to such infiltration, yet they too yield C-14. The presence of C-14 in diamonds refutes this argument completely.
In every case, the above proposed explanations fail to account for the evidence. This is extremely significant. The arguments used by some evolutionists to explain the presence of C-14 in these supposedly extremely ancient samples completely fail – their arguments are negated by hard, empirical science.
The Simpler Explanation: A Young Earth
The most straightforward interpretation of the detectable presence of C-14 is that coal, oil, fossils, and diamonds are not millions or billions of years old, but only thousands of years old. If these materials were deposited during and after the global flood (about 4,500 – 6,000 years ago), we would expect them to still contain measurable C-14 today — which is precisely what the evidence reveals.
This aligns perfectly with the biblical record of creation (Genesis 1) and the worldwide flood (Genesis 6–9). The deep burial of massive plant material during the flood would explain the formation of coal and oil. Burial during the flood would also explain why C-14 ages of 50,000 to 60,000 years are currently indicated whereas the biblical flood was only around 4,500 to 6,000 years ago. Prior to the flood, the atmospheric C-14/C-12 ratio is thought to have been much lower than today, due to factors such as a stronger geomagnetic field, a larger pre-flood biosphere, and different atmospheric conditions. Organisms buried during the flood therefore contained much less C-14 when they died. When tested today, they yield artificially inflated ages because standard radiocarbon dating methods incorrectly assume that the C-14/C-12 ratio has always been constant.
Diamonds may have been formed during the upheavals of the flood as a result of immense geological pressure and brought to the surface by volcanic processes. In this framework, measurable C-14 is not a mystery, as it is for evolutionists, but an entirely expected outcome.
Biblical-Theological Reflection
The apostle Peter warned that in the last days, scoffers would deny the truth of the biblical narrative (2 Peter 3:3–7). The debate over C-14 in coal and diamonds illustrates this very point. Evidence that points to a young earth and a catastrophic flood is routinely dismissed, not because the evidence is weak, but because it contradicts the reigning paradigm of naturalism and deep time.
The psalmist reminds us, “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm” (Psalm 33:9). The God who created the heavens and the earth in six days is the same God who buried the pre-flood world in judgment and preserved Noah and his family. The testimony of C-14 in the earth’s crust stands as a scientific confirmation of the biblical history of the world.
Conclusion
The presence of measurable carbon-14 in coal, oil, fossils, and diamonds represents what I can only describe as a fatal flaw in the evolutionary theory of deep time. No C-14 should remain after 100,000 years, yet it is found in abundance in materials supposedly millions or billions of years old.
Furthermore, the coal and diamonds that contain C-14 are found in rock strata that are purported to be millions or billions of years old. Thus, not only does the presence of C-14 in coal and diamonds undermine the age of the materials themselves, it also completely negates the supposedly ancient age of the rock strata in which they are found. If coal and diamonds are only tens of thousands of years old, the rock strata that contain them simply CANNOT be millions or billions of years old.
Thus, the presence of detectable C-14 is a huge problem for the deep-time framework for rock strata, known as the Geological Time Scale (GTS). And the GTS is the only means that evolutionists have of justifying the vast amount of time necessary for the excruciatingly slow processes of genetic mutation and natural selection to have occurred. Without this deep-time model, the theory of evolution completely collapses; it is dead in the water.
Evolutionists attempt to dismiss the presence of C-14 through appeals to contamination, background noise, in-situ production, or carbon migration. But each explanation collapses under scrutiny, especially in light of the consistent C-14/C-12 ratios across diverse samples, as well as the impervious nature of diamonds.
The simplest explanation is that these materials are not ancient at all, but relatively young, and this, in turn, is fully consistent with the biblical record of a recent creation and global flood. Once again, the evidence from science confirms the Word of God: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).
