Evolution’s Fatal Flaws (Part 1)

EVOLUTION’S FATAL FLAWS (Part 1): EVOLUTION IS NOT OBSERVABLE TODAY

Can a scientific theory be valid if it cannot be observed, tested, or reproduced in real-time? Evolutionary theory—particularly macro-evolution, the transformation of one species into a completely different one—is often taught as scientific fact. But how scientific is it, really, if it cannot be witnessed in action?

In a recent online interview, biologist Dr. Marco Fasoli from Cambridge University outlined several fatal flaws in the theory of evolution. While I have listed them here in a slightly different order, his criticisms are shared by many scientists around the world. These eight flaws will form the foundation for this series:

  1. Evolution is not observable today
  2. Evolution has not been observed in the past
  3. Its proposed mechanism of natural selection and mutation has been shown conclusively not to work
  4. It presupposes but cannot account for the origin of life
  5. It violates the second law of thermodynamics
  6. It fails to account for irreducible complexity in biological systems
  7. It fails to account for the origin of specified information in biological systems
  8. It violates many first principles in philosophy, rendering the concept of evolution metaphysically impossible

Dr. Fasoli is not alone. Other prominent scientists, including those who once subscribed to Darwinian theory, have expressed similar doubts. These include Dr. Michael Behe (Professor of Biochemistry at Lehigh University), Dr. Stephen Meyer (Director of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute), and Dr. Günter Bechly (paleontologist and former curator at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart). In fact, more than 1,000 doctoral scientists have signed the “Dissent From Darwin” statement, openly expressing their skepticism about the scientific validity of evolutionary theory.

Over this series, I will examine each of these fatal flaws in detail, with reference to respected academic research and scientific analysis. For clarity, I will focus on macro-evolution: the proposed transformation of one species into a fundamentally different species through mutation and natural selection, as outlined in the Neo-Darwinian synthesis.

What Is Evolution, and Why Must It Be Observable?

Let us begin with the first and most foundational flaw: evolution is not observable today.

Science is grounded in empirical observation. For a theory to be truly scientific, its mechanisms must be observable, testable, and repeatable. While micro-evolution (small changes within a species, such as variation in beak size or fur color) is observable and uncontested, macro-evolution (the rise of new species with novel biological features and complexity) has never been directly observed.

Evolutionists often point to adaptive changes within populations, such as finches developing longer beaks or bacteria developing drug resistance, as evidence of evolution in action. However, these are examples of variation within a kind, not the emergence of an entirely new species. They reflect built-in genetic adaptability, not the upward creation of novel genetic information.

The Finch Fallacy: Variation, Not Evolution

One of the most cited examples of evolution is Charles Darwin’s observation of finch beaks in the Galápagos Islands. Darwin noted that some finches developed longer or shorter beaks in response to environmental changes and he hypothesised that such variations, accumulated over time, could lead to the development of entirely new species.

However, modern genetics has clarified that these adaptations are simply the result of the recombination and expression of existing genetic material. No new genetic information is created. In fact, such adaptation often results in a net loss of genetic information. Finches with longer beaks are better able to crack open seeds and flourish, and so they then survive better and reproduce more extensively than finches with short beaks, ultimately predominating the population. Thus, finches with short beaks will eventually die off in these areas. In such a case, the population simply loses the genetic potential for short beaks: the genome is reduced in complexity rather than added to.

As Dr. Lee Spetner, an MIT-trained physicist and critic of neo-Darwinism, observes:

“All the mutations examined so far turn out to reduce the information in the genome. Not even one mutation has been observed that adds information.” (Not by Chance!, 1997)

Darwin’s finches demonstrate the flexibility of a species to adapt within pre-existing genetic limits. They do not demonstrate the generation of new kinds of organisms. As Ken Ham, founder of Answers in Genesis, puts it:

“The changes in finch beaks are simply variations within a kind. There’s no evidence that finches are changing into something fundamentally different. Finches are still finches.”

Viral Mutations: Adaptation Through Degradation

Another commonly cited example of evolution is the development of drug resistance in viruses. This, too, is a form of micro-evolution and not evidence of macro-evolution.

Viruses often survive antiviral treatments by undergoing genetic mutations. However, these mutations are typically degradative. They alter or disable target proteins, making the virus less susceptible to drugs. Drug resistance in viruses results from the loss, degradation, or rearrangement of existing genetic material rather than the creation of new genetic information in the virus’s genome (DNA). In doing so, they lose complexity rather than gain it. These changes do not produce new biological systems or novel genetic information; they simply allow the organism to survive in a changed environment.

As Dr. Georgia Purdom, a molecular geneticist, explains:

“Drug resistance is often cited as evidence for evolution, but it’s actually a perfect example of the limits of evolutionary change. The virus remains a virus—often a weaker one, at that.” (Answers in Genesis)

Dr. John Sanford, a geneticist and the inventor of the gene gun, elaborates:

“A mutation that disables a gene can sometimes help an organism survive in an artificial environment, but this is not upward evolution. It’s devolution.” (Genetic Entropy)

The Information Barrier

At the core of evolutionary theory is the assumption that random mutations and natural selection can generate the vast volumes of new, meaningful genetic information required to form new biological structures. Yet this is precisely what has never been observed.

Every known example of mutation in nature either shuffles existing information or degrades it. No known natural process has ever been observed to generate new functional information. Werner Gitt, a German information scientist and author of In the Beginning Was Information, writes:

“Information is always the result of intelligence. No known natural law or process can generate information from disorder.”

This presents a formidable challenge to macro-evolution. If no known process can generate the kind of information necessary to form new proteins, organs, or biological systems, then the theory collapses under its own assumptions.

Biblical Consistency

The biblical creation account affirms that living creatures reproduce “according to their kind” (Genesis 1:24-25), a phrase repeated throughout the creation narrative. This is not only a theological statement but a biological one. It affirms the observable reality that while species can diversify within limits, they do not transform into fundamentally different organisms.

This biblical insight corresponds perfectly with what science reveals today. While variation exists, it operates within fixed boundaries. No new kinds emerge; no upward progression of complexity is seen. Instead, we find stability, degeneration, or minor variation—all of which are consistent with a creation model.

Conclusion

In science, empirical observation is king. A theory that claims to explain the origin of all life must be observable, testable, and repeatable. Macro-evolution fails all three tests. What we observe is variation within limits—not transformation of one kind into another. Adaptation is real. Evolution, in the grand Darwinian sense, is not.

As we continue this series, we will see that the unobservability of evolution is just the beginning. Evolution is not merely unproven; it is scientifically implausible.

The evidence, it seems, is not on Darwin’s side.
